Mit einer hedonistischen, epikureischen und atheistischen Weltanschauung ist er ein äußerst produktiver Autor im Bereich der Philosophie und hat mehr als 100 Bücher verfasst. Seine Philosophie ist hauptsächlich von Denkern wie Nietzsche, Epikur, den kynischen und kyrenaischen Schulen sowie dem französischen Materialismus beeinflusst. Bekanntheit erlangte er durch das Verfassen von Werken wie „Traité d'athéologie: Physique de la métaphysique“ (ins Englische übersetzt als „Atheist Manifesto: The Case Against Christianity, Judaism, and Islam“), „Politique du rebelle: traité de résistance et d'insoumission“, „Physiologie de Georges Palante, portrait d'un nietzchéen de gauche“, „La puissance d'exister“ und „La sculpture de soi“, für das er 1993 den jährlichen Prix Médicis gewann. Geboren in Argentan als Sohn einer normannischen Bauernfamilie, wurde Onfray im Alter von 10 bis 14 Jahren in ein wöchentliches katholisches Internat geschickt. Dies war eine Lösung, die damals viele Eltern in Frankreich wählten, wenn sie weit entfernt von der Dorfschule wohnten oder Arbeitszeiten hatten, die es zu schwierig oder zu teuer machten, ihre Kinder täglich zur Schule und zurück zu transportieren. Der junge Onfray schätzte seine neue Umgebung jedoch nicht, die er als einen Ort des Leidens beschreibt. Onfray schloss später sein Studium mit dem Lehramt für Philosophie ab. Er unterrichtete dieses Fach zwischen 1983 und 2002 für Oberstufenschüler an einem Gymnasium mit technischem Schwerpunkt in Caen. Zu dieser Zeit gründete er zusammen mit seinen Unterstützern die Université populaire de Caen und verkündete deren Gründung auf kostenloser Basis und auf dem von Onfray im Jahr 2004 verfassten Manifest (La communauté philosophique). Onfray ist Atheist und Autor von „Traité d'Athéologie“ (Atheist Manifesto), das nach seiner Veröffentlichung im Frühjahr 2005 monatelang das meistverkaufte Sachbuch in Frankreich war (das Wort „Athéologie“ entlehnte Onfray von Georges Bataille). Dieses Buch wiederholte seinen populären französischen Erfolg in Italien, wo es im September 2005 erschien und schnell auf Platz eins der italienischen Bestsellerlisten kletterte. Bei den Wahlen 2002 unterstützte Onfray die französische Ligue communiste révolutionnaire (Revolutionäre Kommunistische Liga) und ihren Präsidentschaftskandidaten Olivier Besancenot. Im Jahr 2007 unterstützte er José Bové, stimmte aber letztendlich für Olivier Besancenot und führte ein Interview mit dem zukünftigen französischen Präsidenten Nicolas Sarkozy, den er gegenüber dem Philosophie Magazine als „ideologischen Feind“ bezeichnete. Sein 2010 veröffentlichtes Buch „Le crépuscule d'une idole : L'affabulation freudienne“ (Der Untergang eines Götzen: Die freudsche Konfabulation) war wegen seiner Kritik an Freud Gegenstand erheblicher Kontroversen in Frankreich. Er erkennt Freud als Philosophen an, lenkt jedoch die Aufmerksamkeit auf die beträchtlichen Kosten von Freuds Behandlungen und äußert Zweifel an der Wirksamkeit seiner Methoden. Im Jahr 2015 veröffentlichte er „Cosmos“, das erste Buch einer Trilogie. Onfray meint ironisch, dass dies sein „allererstes Buch“ sei.
