Sir John Ninian Comper (10 June 1864 – 22 December 1960) was a major Scottish architect of the Gothic Revival. He focused almost exclusively on churches, designing and restoring them along with liturgical furnishings, stained glass, and vestments. He masterfully blended Gothic and Classical styles, a method he called “unity by inclusion.” His use of color, iconography, and liturgical focus made his work distinct and highly revered. Comper’s works are found across the UK, including Westminster Abbey, Downside Abbey, and the Welsh National War Memorial. His only U.S. work is the Leslie Lindsey Chapel in Boston’s Emmanuel Church. He revived the medieval “English altar” tradition and designed striking reredos. His planning was also innovative, as seen in St Mary-in-the-Baum in Rochdale, adapted to its tight urban setting. Married to Grace Bucknall, he had six children, including an architect and an aircraft designer. He died in London in 1960, and his ashes were interred beneath his own windows at Westminster Abbey.
