John Joseph Kelson Jr., born February 27, 1922 in Los Angeles and died April 28, 2012 in Beverly Hills, was an American jazz saxophonist, flautist, and clarinetist, known professionally as Jackie Kelso. He began studying clarinet at eight and switched to alto sax at fifteen, encouraged by Chico Hamilton. By graduation, he was already performing with Charles Mingus and Buddy Collette on Central Avenue. In the 1940s, he played with jazz legends like Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton. Drafted in 1942, he served with the Navy band at St Mary’s College alongside Marshal and Ernie Royal. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he collaborated with artists such as Johnny Otis, Gene Vincent, and Duke Ellington, and worked as a studio musician from 1964 to 1984, including at The Concert for Bangladesh. He is believed to have played the uncredited flute solo on The Left Banke’s hit “Walk Away Renee.” After a hiatus, he returned in 1995 with the Count Basie Orchestra and resumed using his birth name, Kelson. He died at age 90, remembered for his exceptional versatility and a career that spanned over six decades in jazz and beyond.
